Deciding to try for a baby is such an exciting decision and the desire for a baby can be overwhelming. There are however now 1 in 6 couples in the UK that experience difficulty falling pregnant which can be extremely upsetting and stressful. Many couples are told there’s nothing physically wrong and no medical reason is given as to why they are struggling to conceive.
Down to Earth Reflexology practises Reproflexology, a specially adapted form of reflexology that helps to enhance fertility, helping couples either prior to seeking medical help or whilst undergoing assisted forms of conception including Clomid, IUI, IVF and ICSI. It can also support couples using surrogacy or donors in IVF cycles.
When should I start treatment?
Both partners can benefit from reflexology treatments, which can be started at any stage of your fertility planning, whether you are enhancing your general health before trying for a baby, having problems with conception or already receiving fertility treatment. You may already have a child but finding it more difficult to fall pregnant this time round.
How will it help?
Reproflexology helps to support medical conditions in women such as Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), Endometriosis, Fibroids or Ovarian cysts which may be affecting your chances of conception. It can help to:
Similarly, in men it can help to improve sperm quality, support any medical conditions and reduce stress levels. It is often beneficial for both partners to be treated.
If you are undergoing fertility investigations or are about to embark upon an assisted conception programme, such as IVF, this time can be described as “like being on an emotional roller coaster” but reflexology can help you stay calm and positive through the ups and downs of treatment and support you through each stage of your journey.
What is the process?
Every client is treated as an individual. The process is started with an in-depth consultation and repro-assessment, which can be done individually or together as a couple. Individual consultations last 2 hours, joint consultations last 3 hours. A pre-conception questionnaire will be completed including detailed medical history, details of any fertility treatment being undertaken and information on your diet, lifestyle and stress levels.
A pre-conception plan will be formulated outlining your treatment protocol along with nutritional guidance, lifestyle advice and tips to help manage stress. It takes three months for the reproductive cells to mature in the male and female so this is an opportunity to get the body in tip top condition.
It is usual for treatments to start on a weekly basis and the duration will depend on your needs. Different reflexology protocols are used for different conditions. For IUI, IVF and ICSI the protocols will support your drug regime. Reflexology gives you both the opportunity to take time out for yourself when you need it most.
I went to see Lindsay to get support through an IVF cycle. At the time I was also busy at work and had a stressful home renovation project on the go. I always looked forward to our sessions because it was an oasis of calm during the madness. It felt good to be doing something natural to support the intense fertility treatment and to relieve stress. I’m happy to say that our mission was successful and I am due to give birth in October. Lindsay genuinely cares about you and the outcome you are looking for; it’s very easy to open up to her and she’s a good listener. Not only is she a great reflexologist, but she also gives you so many other hints and tips to help with any issues you are having.
After conceiving quickly with our daughter, it was a shock to find it difficult when trying for a second time. I had almost given up hope when Lindsay was recommended to me. Her sessions became the highlight of my week, she is so calm and knowledgeable and the treatments are amazingly relaxing. She worked on regulating my cycle and helped me to understand my body better. Within four months of seeing her I was pregnant! Words can’t describe my gratitude for all her help.
Lindsay was recommended to me after my second pregnancy sadly ended in miscarriage. A year of trying later I had not fallen pregnant again so visited Lindsay. I was immediately reassured by Lindsay's calming and professional manner and the treatment room was so relaxing, I know I fell asleep several times! I was provided with in depth information on how to change my diet and my lifestyle to give my body the best chance of conceiving. My husband also attended a session and found the treatment very relaxing. I conceived only 2 months later!
Pregnancy is a joyous time but can also offer some challenges along the way. Reflexology can support the physical, mental and emotional changes and strains of becoming a new parent.
During pregnancy huge changes occur with the body adapting to the stresses of physical change. Reflexology could help ease the discomfort associated with pregnancy, help the body prepare for labour and make pregnancy more enjoyable. Specific pregnancy-related conditions that may respond well to reflexology include fluid retention, heartburn, tiredness, nausea, headaches and constipation.
Treatments are offered through all stages of pregnancy. Research has shown that regular reflexology treatments during pregnancy can help speed up and reduce the pain of labour.
So much of the build up when preparing to have your baby is focused on the birth itself, but it's just as important and certainly very beneficial to look after yourself once he or she has arrived. You will have been through a physical and emotional journey and will need attention and support.
Reflexology can be helpful after the birth assisting recovery and restoring your body to a non-pregnant state. It can help reduce anxiety and tension, aches and stiffness, help increase vitality and aid restfulness. Treatments allow you a time to relax and gain precious “me time”.
